Monthly Community Call
Summary: Join us for a heartfelt and informative conversation on the role of animals at the end of life—both for humans and their beloved companions.
We'll begin with Amy Stelpflug, CTRS, CDP, Volunteer & Animal Assisted Coordinator at Mayo Clinic Hospice, who will guide us through the different types of support animals you may encounter in end-of-life care. Learn how to navigate the distinctions between:
Facility Dogs – working professionals in institutional settings
Therapy Dogs – offering comfort to many across settings
Companion Animals – beloved pets supporting individuals
Amy will also explore how to request animal-assisted visits, what to consider when including personal pets, and when to gently discourage animal presence—especially when the pet may be distressed or the environment may not be ideal.
We’ll then transition into the world of animal companionship at their end of life with Beth Sutherland, MA, Companion Animal Doula and Transition Specialist. Beth brings deep wisdom, compassion, and guidance on:
Recognizing the signs that a pet is approaching end of life
Supporting both the animal and the human during transitions
Honoring the sacred bond we share with our pets in their final days
As always, we’ll allow space for Q&A and heartfelt discussion. This is a unique opportunity to reflect on the human-animal bond through the lens of hospice, grief, and doula work.
Save the date and join us in community. Whether you work with patients, pets, or both—this session promises connection, insight, and a deeper understanding of how we hold space for all beings at the threshold.
Time: 7pm-8:30pm
Speakers: Amy Stelpflug and Beth Sutherland
